More about water retention (oedema)...
Fluid retention is an accumulation of fluid beneath the skin. Common sites include the fingers, abdomen, breasts and ankles. Other symptoms may include headaches, frequent urination and possibly Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). "My feet are killing me", "I can't get my wedding ring off" or "my trousers feel tighter than usual" are frequent complaints by those suffering with fluid retention!
Water retention can affect both men and women and can be caused by a wide range of factors, such as poor kidney function, heart disease, poor mineral balance, HRT and other drugs (such as cortisone). However, it is particularly common with women going through the menopause or around the time of their monthly cycles (e.g. as a part of premenstrual syndrome (PMS)). It is also sometimes a complication of diabetes, or following abuse of laxatives or diuretic drugs.
Excess sodium is associated with raised blood pressure (although not everyone is affected in this way). As sodium levels rise in the body, fluids are made less concentrated by retaining more water. A diet high in table salt is therefore also a common cause of oedema or fluid retention.
